Symbols of Easter
Who can think of Easter without thinking of Easter eggs, or maybe the
Easter Bunny? There are a number of traditional symbols of Easter, some
of them less well known than others. Most of them are also symbols of the
Spring season:

Easter Angels
Angels are an integral part of
the Easter story. An angel appeared at
Jesus' tomb, frightened the Roman guards, rolled away the stone from the
tomb, and later told the myrrh-bearing women of Jesus' resurrection. Two
angels witnessed Jesus' ascent into Heaven and prophesied his return.
Easter Candles
Candles form an essential part of the traditional Easter vigil service on
the evening of Holy Saturday.
Easter Bells
Bells are rung in Europe throughout the year, but they are not rung
on Good Friday or Holy Saturday. They are silent as a token of mourning
for the death of Jesus. They are then rung on Easter Sunday as a celebration
of Jesus' resurrection.
Easter Parade
It is said that the Emperor Constantine ordered Christians to wear
their best clothes at Easter, to observe and
honor the holy day.
Easter Lily
Because the traditional Easter color is white, a white lily has long been considered to be the Easter flower. It
is a symbol of purity and represents the pure new life Christians are
promised through the resurrection of Jesus.
Easter Lamb
The
lamb is an Easter symbol with strong biblical
links: Early Christians likened the joyous Christian celebration of the
liberation from death represented by the resurrection, to the joyous Passover
festival, which commemorates
the liberation of the Hebrews from their years of bondage in
Egypt.
Easter Butterfly
The butterfly is one of the traditional Easter
symbols. Its life cycle is
said to be symbolic of the meaning of the life of Christ.
Easter Eggs
Easter eggs are specially decorated eggs given out to
celebrate the Easter holiday. Of all the symbols associated with Easter, the
egg, the symbol of new life, is the most identifiable. The customs and
traditions of using eggs have been associated with Easter for centuries.
Easter Bunny
The Easter Bunny is a symbolic rabbit or hare associated
with Easter, especially in Western European cultures. Children are often told that Easter eggs are
brought by the Easter bunny.
