Craft a Felt Valentine Swag

When decorating the home for Valentine's Day, a hand crafted valentine swag is easy and effective. Felt makes a particularly nice material to craft with because it does not unravel. Other materials that can be used in making a Valentine's Day swag include ribbon, wooden beads, and raffia. A small amount of polyester fiberfill will be necessary as well. For a scented swag, lavender or potpourri can be used for stuffing.

To make a country looking swag, use pink, deep red, or tan felt with plaid one-inch ribbon in matching colors. The swag will consist of a large padded heart in the center, a smaller heart on each side, and wooden beads on the sides. The beads will be threaded on the ribbons.

Make a heart pattern by cutting a piece of folded paper. The central heart should be about six inches in diameter. Cut two in the same color of felt. Use pinking shears for added interest. Sew around the edges, leaving an opening for stuffing. Stuff the heart with fiberfill, lavender, or potpourri, then complete the stitching. Do the same with two four inch hearts. For a longer swag, make two more hearts somewhat smaller.

To assemble the swag, place the hearts on the table. Using a large needle threaded with a strip of raffia, stitch into the side of one heart and into the next. Pull the raffia up and cut so that you have a long enough piece to tie into a cute bow. Do the same between each of the hearts so that they are all attached to each other.

On the outer hearts, punch a hole with a hole punch. A fabric punch with grommets can be used as well. Thread a three foot long piece of ribbon through the grommet on each side. Pull the ribbon through until the ends are even. Do the same for both sides. Thread a large wooden bead on each side. Tie the ends of the ribbon in an overhand knot. Hang the swag over a doorway or wherever desired.

The same idea can be used to make a wooden heart swag. Instead of felt hearts, wooden heart cutouts can be used. Drill a hole on each side of each heart and thread the raffia strips through the holes. Tie as described above. Before assembling the swag, the wooden hearts can be painted as desired with acrylic paint. The hearts can be painted in solid red, pink or white or slogans like "Be my Valentine" can be painted on them. They can be made to look like the familiar candy hearts printed with love messages.

Either style of swag can also be embellished with silk flowers in complementary colors. Country style swag decorations are suitable for Valentine's Day, but look attractive any time of the year. The same style of swag can be used at Christmas with a little metallic paint added and some holly trim. During the fall, the same style of swag can be made with fall colors and include autumn leaves. Hearts are romantic and charming at any time of the year!
